Suncrest SVC Project

Suncrest 230kV 300MVAr Dynamic Reactive Power Support Project

In 2015, the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) selected Horizon West Transmission, LLC (Horizon West) as the Approved Project Sponsor to permit, construct, own, operate, and maintain the Suncrest SVC Project.  Horizon West was the first CAISO non-incumbent transmission owner to be awarded a FERC Order 1000 competitive solicitation.

Located 30 miles east of San Diego, California, the project is designed to handle fast, reactive power for high-voltage transmission, including a one-mile underground 230 kV transmission line to interconnect with the existing Suncrest substation, which is owned and operated by San Diego Gas & Electric Company.

In October, 2018, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) approved the CPCN application for Horizon West to build, own, operate and maintain the Suncrest SVC Project, its first project.  The approval of the Suncrest SVC Project by the CPUC also established Horizon West as a regulated public utility in the state of California.

The Suncrest SVC Project is expected to be in commercial operation by December 2019.
